Kick-off Meeting 101

Overview

Both of these content pieces were created for course EME 5602, Technology & Design in my ISLT Master's program at FSU. The focus of the course included principles of visual design and implementing those principles into work like those seen below. Some of the principles that are exhibited in the works below include the contiguity principle, the multimedia principle, and the modality principle.

The design process included the following steps:

1) I created a storyboard that segmented the main aspects of my topic into the what, why, and how of a kick-off meeting.

2) To ensure I included the following five instructional events, I added a review element and an application element to my storyboard.

a) gain the learner's attention when stating the topic of the video
b) state the learning objectives
c) present the instructional content or stimulus material
d) provide learning guidance
e) stimulate recall and retention

3) I used a basic design template from Canva that I then altered to suit my needs.

4) Using those design elements, I created the lesson in a PPT.

5) I added the script to the PPT.

6) After I created the PPT, I recorded the screen capture and video.

7) After completing the video, I recycled the content into a Storyline course and adjusted the overall flow. I also recorded a separate video that is embedded within the Storyline course. There are also additional graphic elements within the course.

Tools used: PowerPoint, Screenflow, Canva, Articulate Storyline

Instructional Video

In this video I combined text and graphics that effectively applied the contiguity principle (placing relevant text in close proximity to the referenced graphic). I also applied the multimedia principle by using audio to explain a complex topic, instead of using text to explain is. I incorporated audio into each and every slide from start to end of the video to maintain continuity and consistency. I also presented slides to gain the learners attention, state the objectives, present the content, provide guidance, and stimulate recall.

Multimedia Instructional Website

I created this lesson using the same content as the above video, but adjusted the presentation. I provided a tab menu that enables users to easily find and access the entire lesson. I applied visual design principles to make the graphics functional and effective in communicating key information. I created a video and embedded the video directly into the lesson, and applied the visual and typographic design guidelines in the design of the video. I also applied visual design principles to effectively integrate text and graphics (e.g., symmetry, use of white space, contiguity principle, multimedia principle, etc.).
